You are reading a lot about a windows rebate program that is available to people living in Ontario. Much of what you read indicates the program is accomplishing good things. Even so, you are not sure exactly what the program is, how it works, and why you should be interested. Here are answers to some of the more frequently asked questions.

What is the Green Ontario Fund?

One of the things you’ve learned is that the rebates are issued under the auspices of the Green Ontario Fund. This fund is a provincial agency that is structured as a non-profit entity. The goal is to ultimately reduce the strain on the environment by greenhouse emissions and employing energy alternatives that rely less on traditional sources like fossil fuels.

One of the ways that the Fund promotes this conversion from traditional sources to more environmentally-friendly ones is through rebate programs. Doing so empowers residential and commercial building owners by placing climate action more directly in their control. Thanks to the rebates, it’s possible to reduce energy consumption while allowing the citizens of Ontario to build their savings.

What is the GreenON Rebate All About?

The GreenON rebate is one of the programs offered under the Green Ontario Fund. As this relates to windows, the rebate makes it more affordable to replace older and less efficient windows in homes, office buildings, dental clinics, dental offices and other qualified structures. Those who apply and are accepted into the program can receive as much as $500.00 for each window that is replaced by an Energy Star rated window. There is a maximum rebate of $5,000.00 for each structure that complies with the program’s specifications.

Who Can Qualify for a Rebate?

In order to be eligible for the rebate, you must meet specific qualifications. The first is that you must be a resident of Ontario. You must own or at least live in the residence where the windows replacement takes place. The dwelling itself must be a detached house, semi-detached home, or a townhome.

Please note that the rebate is not limited to homeowners alone. If you are a tenant, it is possible to qualify. In order to do so, you must have written permission from the property owner. The written permission that the owner provides authorizing you to hire a contractor and have the windows replaced will suffice.

The new window installation must be what is known as a brick to brick installation. This means that the older frames as well as the sashes and panes must be replaced.

Can I Use Any Contractor I Choose?

In order to participate in the rebate program, it’s necessary to employ a certified GreenON contractor. Contractors who are approved by the Green Ontario Fund have the credentials to confirm that they are properly certified.

Along with meeting this important qualification, there’s another reason to only utilize the services of a certified contractor. Most will help you prepare and submit the rebate application. Typically, this takes place after you sign the purchase agreement and authorize the contractor to install your new windows.

How Will I Receive the Rebate?

The final step involves submitting documents confirming that the windows you ordered were installed. The confirming documents are submitted directly to the Green Ontario Fund by you. The documents are matched with the approved application and your rebate is processed. The average turnaround time for receiving your rebate cheque is between 8 and 12 weeks.

Contact a certified GreenON contractor today and arrange for a home inspection. Discuss window designs and settle on the one that’s right for your property. Make sure to confirm that your home meets the qualifications for the rebate. Once the details are settled, prepare the application and arrange for the contractor to submit it on your behalf. You’ll begin to enjoy the benefits of a more energy efficient home even before that cheque arrives.
